How Do You Know If Your Dog Is Allergic to Spring?

March 1, 2023

Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. Your lawn will be green and lush, the birds will be chirping, and the flowers will bloom. But spring can also be a time of sickness for your dog!

Dogs get allergies like humans do, and they can have allergic reactions to all sorts of things in their environment. Read on as a local vet discusses some common signs that Fido may be having an allergic reaction during the spring season.

Dogs and Spring Allergies

Spring is a time of year when many dogs get sick. Spring allergies can be serious, but they can also be treated. It’s important to know the signs of spring allergies so that you can help your dog when he or she gets sick.

There are many ways to treat spring allergies in dogs, including medication and lifestyle changes. Adding more exercise into your dog’s routine or switching up his diet with ingredients that may reduce inflammation caused by pollen particles are a couple things you can try.

Signs of Allergies in Dogs

Dry, Itchy Skin

If your dog has dry, itchy skin in the spring, it’s likely that they’re suffering from allergies. The season brings more pollen and other allergens that make their way into your home through open windows and doors. Dogs can also be allergic to grasses and weeds.

If you notice any red bumps on your pup’s coat or skin (or if they start scratching more than usual), consult a vet as soon as possible. And as always with allergies, keep those ears clean!

Hives, Bumps, and Rashes

If your dog is allergic to spring, he or she may experience hives. Hives are red and itchy bumps that appear on the skin. They can appear anywhere on the body, but often they show up on your dog’s face or belly. Hives are small at first and then grow larger over time. Some hives can even look like a rash.

Watery Eyes, Runny Nose, Sneezing Fits

If your dog is allergic to spring, they may get watery eyes, runny noses and sneezing fits. This can be very annoying for your dog, but it’s also a sign that they’re having an allergic reaction. The best way to help is by getting them into treatment as soon as possible.

And if you have more questions or wish to schedule Fido for a checkup, please don’t hesitate to call us, your local vet, anytime!
