9 Ways to Beat Litterbox Smells

August 1, 2019

If you have a cat, it’s probably safe to say you’re familiar with litterbox odors. While it’s very convenient that your pet will use a litterbox, Fluffy’s purrsonal powder room probably isn’t doing much for your decor. It can also get, well, a bit smelly. Read on as a local Las Vegas, NV vet offers tips on beating bad litterbox odors.

Cleaning

The best way to beat litterbox odors is also the most obvious: keep your kitty’s powder room clean. We recommend scooping daily, and changing the litter about once a week.

Product Choices

Feel free to experiment with different litters, and see if you and/or your pet have any preferences. You may also want to try modern litterboxes, such as self-cleaning ones or stackable ‘sifting’ ones.

Ventilation

Make sure Fluffy’s litterbox is in a spot that has good ventilation. If it’s in a spare bathroom, keep the fan on in that room.

Liners

Pan liners-particularly odor-absorbent ones-can also help beat odors. You’ll still have to clean your cat’s litterbox regularly, however.

Deodorizers

You can get quite a few different types of deodorizers, such as powders and sprays, that are made specifically for beating litterbox smells. You can also just sprinkle plain baking soda in your pet’s litter pan.

Air Purifiers

Don’t underestimate the power of a good air purifier! This will also help remove dust, pet fur, and dander from your air. Be sure to change the filter regularly.

Air Fresheners

There are a few things to consider when getting air fresheners. Many of these products are very heavily perfumed, and don’t necessarily last long. That’s because they tend to mask odors, rather than truly eliminating them. Choose products that actually break down scent molecules. You may also want to consider putting a timed-release one near Fluffy’s bathroom.

Avoid Overcrowding

Cats typically don’t like sharing litterboxes. If you have more than one kitty, make sure each of your feline pals has their own box. It’s also a good idea to have at least one extra.

Plants!

Plants can give any room a cozy, welcoming feeling. They also help keep your air smelling fresh! Just be sure to choose only pet-safe plants. You can find a list of non-toxic options at the ASPCA website here .
