Tips For Walking Your Dog

January 15, 2019

Did you know that January is Walk Your Dog Month? In many parts of the country, it’s pretty cold at this time of year, and isn’t exactly the best time of year for taking a long stroll with your furry pal. However, here in Nevada, this is perfect weather for walking Fido. Read on as a local Las Vegas, NV vet offers tips on walking your dog.

Paw Care

Don’t forget that your dog is running around barefoot! Fido’s paw pads are very sensitive, so it’s easy for him to get painful burns or blisters from walking on hot ground. He can also cut himself on sharp rocks or broken glass. Keep an eye on the terrain, and use paw balm or wax to protect those furry feet. Keeping your pup’s claws trimmed is also important.

Training

Make sure that your canine friend knows basic doggy obedience commands like Sit , Stay , Come , Heel , and Lay Down . This isn’t just about petiquette: proper training can help you stop Fido from approaching dangerous areas or running off if you drop his leash.

Gear

Make sure your furry buddy has a sturdy leash. If your pooch wears a collar, check it regularly for wear, and make sure it isn’t too tight. Generally, you should be able to easily fit two fingers between the collar and Fido’s neck. Small dogs, brachycephalic pups, and dogs with small heads should have harnesses, instead of collars.

Routes

Fido is very curious and intelligent, and really thrives with lots of stimulation. Change up your route regularly, so your canine companion can enjoy a change of scenery.

Safety

Always put safety first. When you walk Fido on the side of a road, keep him to the outside: he’s shorter, and harder for drivers to spot. This will also help stop him from veering into the road. Also, keep your pet away from dangerous plants, like cactus, as well as from areas that could be housing snakes, scorpions, or other critters. At night, stick to well-lit, safe areas.

Water

Make sure Fido stays properly hydrated. On hot days, Fido can overheat and/or get dehydrated very quickly. Consider getting a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. These are great for when you are on the go!
