Thanksgiving With Fido

With Thanksgiving approaching fast, many of us are looking forward to savoring some of that delicious holiday food with our friends and families. Don’t forget about Fido! In this article, a Southwest Las Vegas, NV vet discusses keeping your dog happy and healthy through the holiday.

Before your guests arrive, take Fido for a long walk, and then indulge him with a fun play session. Your furry friend will be much calmer-and therefore better behaved-if he’s a bit tired.

Fido will definitely take note when that savory turkey comes out of the oven. You can share some of your main course with your pet. Just be sure to only give him plain, cooked meat, without the bones, skin, or fat. Cooked squash and pumpkin are also fine, as long as they aren’t covered in butter, sauces, and/or spices. Dogs can also have some shredded deli meat, some cheese or eggs, or small amounts of cooked bacon or sausage. Keep in mind that many popular foods are toxic to dogs. Don’t give your canine buddy raw meat, dough, or yeast; meat on the bone; chocolate; nuts; garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; alcohol; pitted fruits; or xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Man’s Best Friend is a very opportunistic snacker, and has been known to go through the trash in search of leftovers. The garbage could contain things like tin foil, fat trimmings, toothpicks, bones, and can lids, which are all hazardous to pets. Use a garbage can with a lid that closes securely.

You want Fido to put his best paw forward. Before the big day, give your pooch a bath. We also recommend dusting and vacuuming thoroughly, and changing your air filter, especially if your guests have allergies.

Keep your canine companion in mind when decorating. Candles and potpourri burners are definitely not pet-safe, and should be kept in high, secure spots that Fido can’t reach. Wreaths and garlands can also be dangerous, as they could choke or strangle pets.

Consider putting Fido in a quiet back room with food, treats, and toys during dinner and as guests are coming and going. You don’t want him begging, or bumping into your aunt and knocking that bean casserole out of her hands.
