Cold Treats for Dogs

The dog days of summer are here! Many of us enjoy having a cold snack on those sweltering summer days. Of course, our canine buddies also enjoy a frozen treat! Here, a Las Vegas, NV vet discusses frozen treats for Fido.

Start with a base of natural peanut butter, bananas, pureed pumpkin, and/or plain yogurt. You can add pieces of kibble, crushed-up doggy treats, bacon bits, shredded meat or cheese, or blueberries.

Put doggy treats or chew sticks in waxed paper cups, and pour sodium-free broth into them. Freeze overnight, and offer one to your furry pal when it gets really hot.

Sodium-free broth is a great treat for your canine friend. You can offer Fido beef, fish, turkey, or chicken broth. Just check the label to be sure it doesn’t contain MSG.

For these, you’ll want to mix shredded turkey with organic gravy or baby food. Make sure the baby food contains only dog-safe ingredients. You’ll need to divide it into small portions before serving. An ice cube tray is a great way to do this. You can also get a cute mold just for Fido.

Mix some ripe bananas with natural peanut butter, and divide into small servings. You may want to try these yourself!

Put some apple slices and shredded chicken into an ice cube tray, and then pour sodium free broth over it. Freeze overnight. Voila!

Cook up some hamburger, and add water to thin it out. You can also add some cheese and/or bacon bits. Freeze in small portions.

This one is bound to get you some tail wags! Get some deli meat and shred it. Mix it with cheese, egg, bacon bits, and plain yogurt, then freeze overnight.

You can also freeze a roll of cooked lamb, and give your furry pal a slice or two for a snack.

Feel free to experiment with different flavors and food combinations. Just stick with foods that are safe for Fido. Never give your pup garlic, onions, or chives; nuts; chocolate; pitted fruit, especially avocado; grapes, currants, or raisins; meat on the bone; or raw meat, dough, or yeast.
