Is your cat an indoor-only pet? If so, that’s great! Our feline friends are definitely safer and healthier living indoors, where they aren’t exposed to the hazards posed by cars, weather, predators, toxic plants, and other dangers. Fluffy will still appreciate having a taste of nature, however. One thing you can do to keep your kitty happy is to create an indoor cat garden. A Las Vegas, NV vet discusses making a kitty garden below.
Fluffy’s garden can contain several types of herbs, including parsley, rosemary, sage, and dill. You’ll also benefit from having fresh herbs on hand to cook with. Fluffy’s favorite plant-catnip-is also a must.
Potted plants will not only give your home a pretty, natural look, they will also help filter the air, and keep your home smelling nice. Some good choices are Boston ferns, Cast Iron plants, Spider plants, variegated wax plants, Prayer plants, and Money plants. Several types of palms are also safe for our feline friends. Ponytail palms, Areca palms, Kentia palms, and Bamboo palms are all good options.
Succulents are a great choice because they are easy to grow, and don’t need a lot of water. Jade plants, Echeveria, Painted Lady plants, and Chicken and Hen plants are all suitable choices.
If you want to add a bit of color to your home, consider getting some African violets. Many types of orchids, including the Moth orchid, are also safe.
Wheatgrass is not only safe for cats, it’s also good for both you and Fluffy. Lemongrass is another safe choice, and will make your house smell fresh and clean.
A patio or sunroom is a great place for Fluffy’s garden. Use large planters, ones that your kitty can’t easily knock over. Don’t be surprised if you find that your cat likes to hide behind some of your plants and dash out at you playfully as you walk past. After all, pretending to be a ferocious hunter can be great fun for kitties! Last but not least, be sure to only choose plants that are safe for your feline friend. You can find a complete list of non-toxic houseplants at the ASPCA website.
