Caring for a Sugar Glider

September 1, 2016

Have you been looking for a small pet that is really cute, but a little unusual? A sugar glider may be perfect match for you! These tiny animals are very charming, and can make great pets. Sugar gliders do have some specific care needs, however, so we recommend doing some research before adopting a pair. A Southwest Las Vegas, NV vet discusses basic sugar glider care in this article.

Cage

Sugar gliders do best with buddies, so we recommend getting a bonded pair. For a single pair of sugar gliders, you’ll need a cage that is at least 3 feet wide and 2 feet high, though bigger is better. These little ones like to climb, so choose a cage that offers lots of vertical space. You’ll need to add some bedding, as well as basic accessories, such as pouches and a water bottle. Be sure to include plenty of toys as well. Some good options are rope swings, vertical branches, and solid exercise wheels. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Diet

Feeding sugar gliders isn’t difficult, but it is a bit more complicated than popping open a can of pet food. Sugar gliders need a balanced mix of food, including protein, such as turkey or chicken baby food, mealworms, crickets, and boiled eggs; fruits and veggies, such as apples, pears, and melons; dry food; and supplements. Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations, including serving sizes and feeding schedules.

Veterinary Care

Just like any other pet, sugar gliders need proper veterinary care. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. These little ones are also prone to certain illnesses and diseases, so it’s important to watch for any potential signs of illness, such as lethargy, open wounds, and a lack of appetite. Contact your vet immediately if your gliders develop any signs of sickness.

Handling

Sugar gliders are very sweet, but your pets will need time to get to know you, and to learn to trust you. Play with your gliders while they are in a little pouch or tent, or let them snuggle up with you in their pouch. Offering tasty treats can also help make your pets feel at ease. You can also carry your pint-sized pals around with you at home.
