Cute Cat Breeds You Probably Never Heard Of

February 15, 2022

Do you know what type of cat you have? There are actually several different organizations dedicated to cat breeds. Interestingly, they don’t agree on how many breeds there are.The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) allows 44 cute kitties, while The International Cat Association recognizes 71. In this article, a local vet introduces a few you may not be familiar with.

Ojos Azules

The Ojos Azules has actually been around since 1984, but they are still quite rare. These cats can sport a variety of colors and patterns, but they all have striking blue eyes. In fact, the name Ojos Azules translates to ‘blue eyes’ in Spanish!

Cheetoh Cat

The Cheetoh cat is a cross between the Bengal and Ocicat, two exotic breeds. Like many exotic cats, these charismatic furballs have very pretty patterned coats, and are quite the little chatterboxes!

Lykoi

The Lykoi is a small furball that is making big waves. They are known as werewolf cats, because of their appearance: they actually do look a bit wolflike! Don’t worry, though: you won’t turn into a werewolf if Fluffy bites you!

Tennessee Rex

The Tennessee Rex is the only feline on our list that is always a ginger. These fluffy redheads are quite large. They’re also curly! Fluffy’s exact lineage is unknown; the breed traces back to a Tennessee stray that gave birth to some unique looking kittens.

Aphrodite

Named after the Greek love goddess, this is a big kitty with a big heart! Aphrodites have very long back legs, and thick, soft coats. They grow more slowly than most cats, and can take about 3 years to reach their adult size.

Toybob

As the name suggests, the Toybob is a pretty itty bitty kitty. These adorable cats usually don’t get any larger than a 3 to 6 month old kitten. Unlike most toy breeds, they aren’t a miniature version of a bigger breed, but are a unique breed of their own. They are very lovable, and tend to be great climbers and lapcats.

Highlander

A cross between the Jungle Curl and the Desert Lynx, the Highlander first clawed her way into our hearts way back in 2004. These cute kitties are lovable, cuddly, smart, and frisky. Unlike most of our feline friends, they actually like water. They’re also talented little gymnasts!
