Playing With a Senior Cat

September 15, 2020

Cats are very playful, which is one reason they’re so good at entertaining us. Fluffy is absolutely hilarious when she is chasing after that elusive red dot, or pouncing on a catnip mouse! As your furry friend gets older, she will slow down a bit. However, she will still enjoy letting her inner kitten out sometimes. Here, a Las Vegas, NV veterinarian discusses playing with a senior kitty.

Make It Routine

Kitties feel much more secure and comfortable when they are on a steady schedule. Try to make kitty playtime a regular thing. If possible, play with Fluffy at about the same time each night. If you like to unwind by watching TV after dinner, keep some cat toys near your favorite seat.

Don’t Worry About Overdoing It

Our canine companions are extremely loyal, and will really push themselves to please their owners. Cats, on the other hand, really couldn’t care less what we think. Don’t be too concerned about Fluffy overexerting herself. If your feline buddy gets tired, she’ll just quit playing and go take a nap.

Let Fluffy Win

Cats are hunters by nature, so pouncing and jumping are critical skills to them. Fluffy will be quite pleased with herself if she nails a tricky run/jump/meow combination. Let your kitty ‘catch’ her prey sometimes.

Use Senior-Friendly Toys

Just like people, cats slow down as they age. Fluffy may also develop issues with her vision or hearing. (Note: if you know or suspect this is the case, take your kitty to the vet for a full exam.) Your pet may start preferring toys that light up or make noise, as they will be easier for her to track. Wand toys and laser pointers are also great. It’s both more fun and more challenging for kitties to ‘hunt’ things you control.

Choose A Safe Area

Don’t play with your pet in a spot where there are any potential hazards, such as fireplaces or stairs. Keep Fluffy on the ground, preferably on a carpeted surface.

Have Fun

Don’t think of playing with Fluffy as work. This is a great way to spend time with your pet! Playing with your feline friend is a ‘purrfect’ way to relax, and is bound to put a smile on your face.
