Keeping Your Cat Hydrated

Have you ever found your cat helping herself to that glass of ice water you just poured? There’s a good chance that you have. You can’t really blame Fluffy: after all, everyone needs fresh water. At this time of year, hydration is especially crucial. Here, a Las Vegas, NV vet offers tips on keeping your kitty hydrated.

First and foremost, make sure your feline pal always has fresh water. Be sure to clean Fluffy’s bowls daily, so they don’t gather dirt and bacteria. You may need to set out more than one watering station, especially if you have a large house and/or more than one cat.

Cats often prefer running water, at least when it comes to drinking. This could be because Fluffy’s ancestors realized that running water is somewhat less likely to be contaminated than fresh water. Get your kitty a fountain! She may love it!

If there’s one thing we can say about all of our patients, it’s that they really enjoy snacks. Offer your feline friend treats with high moisture content. A can of chilled tuna in water is fine. You can also give Fluffy some sodium-free broth. Another thing you can do is pour tuna juice, organic baby food, gravy, or canned cat food over shaved ice. (Note: if you use baby food or gravy, be sure to get brands that don’t contain garlic or onions.)

When it gets really hot out, drop an ice cube into Fluffy’s bowl. You can also try setting one on a dish or plate for her to lick. Don’t be surprised if your feline buddy decides to play hockey with the piece of ice. Cats’ paw pads help them regulate their temperature, so this is a good way for them to stay cool … and entertain themselves.

One way to prevent your furry pal from getting dehydrated is to keep her from getting too hot. Keep your kitty indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or AC.

One choice everyone owned by a kitty has to make is whether to offer Fluffy canned or dry food. One benefit of canned food is that it does have a higher moisture content than kibble. Ask your vet for more information.
