Did you know that May 14th is National Chihuahua Appreciation Day? These little guys have some pretty big hearts… and a lot of devoted fans! Read on as a Las Vegas, NV vet discusses the Chihuahua.
History
The Chihuahua is actually one of the oldest dog breeds. In fact, depictions of these cute, lovable pooches can be found on artifacts from many ancient civilizations. Although Chihuahuas have been in Mexico for a very long time, no one is quite sure how they originally got there. We do know that the Toltecs, who lived about 1000 years ago, were particularly fond of the Techichi, which is a slightly bigger version of the Chihuahua. It may have been the Aztecs who deliberately bred smaller dogs, thus essentially shrinking the breed to the comical, pint-sized pups we know and love today.
Basics
Chihuahuas are really very fun, loving, and affectionate pets. They’re also quite entertaining, and can be pretty funny to observe and play with. Cuddly and playful, Chihuahuas get extremely attached to their humans. Of course, Fido doesn’t necessarily know-or care-that he’s little. Many Chihuahuas are quite spirited. Some will even pick fights with much bigger pooches!
Size
As you may know, the Chihuahua is the world’s smallest dog. Chihuahuas are very small, rarely growing more than 8 inches high. In fact, many are only 5 inches tall! Generally, they weigh less than 6 pounds. These adorable pups are quite long-lived, and can live over 16 years with good care.
Training
Fido may be petite, but he still needs to learn petiquette. Training is just as important for little dogs as it is for big ones! Make sure your canine buddy knows basic commands, like Sit , Stay and Come . This is important for both doggy manners and safety.
Diet
Obesity is not uncommon with toy breeds like the Chihuahua. It doesn’t take much for small dogs to gain weight. Offer Fido good, high-quality dog food, but don’t go overboard. Ask your vet for specific recommendations for feeding your pint-sized pal, especially when it comes to treats and serving sizes.
Grooming
Chihuahuas get cold quite easily. Get a doggy sweater for Fido to wear in cool weather. Your pup may also like snuggling up into a warm blanket.
