Bunny Care Basics

April 15, 2019

With Easter around the corner, we’re going to see a lot of bunnies and bunny memorabilia this week. Floppy makes a very cute and charming pet, but she does need lots of care in order to thrive. In this article, a Las Vegas, NV vet discusses basic bunny care.

Tips

Unfortunately, at this time of year, many rabbits are adopted on a whim. Often, people don’t really know how to care for bunnies, and soon realize that they’ve bitten off more than they can chew. This results in many sweet pets being rehomed, or worse, not properly cared for. Always do your research before adopting an animal. Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment.

Cage

Floppy will need a comfortable cage or hutch. It should be large enough to allow her plenty of room to hop and play without touching the walls. We always recommend that rabbits live indoors, as they are safer, happier, and more comfortable living with their humans. You’ll need to add a safe, suitable substrate; dishes; a water bottle; and a hide box. You may want to include a litterbox as well. Ask your vet for specific information.

Chewing

Floppy will need time out of her cage every day. She’ll spend a lot of this time playing and finding out what she can chew on. Rabbits don’t chew to be mischievous. They have open-rooted teeth, which must constantly be worn down with chewing. You’ll need to do some bunnyproofing to protect your pet and your belongings. You’ll also need to provide lots of chew toys.

Diet

Fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay, will form the bulk of your pet’s diet. To round out Floppy’s menu, you can offer her commercial pellets for breakfast and dinner. You’ll want to supplement this with safe veggies, such as cucumbers, celery, and, of course, carrots. Floppy has a bit of a sweet tooth, so for treats, you can offer certain fruits, like strawberries or blueberries. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Grooming

Bunnies are quite clean, but they do need help in a few areas. While you should never bathe a rabbit, you will need to brush your pet. You’ll also need to clip Floppy’s claws, and keep her ears and eyes clean. Follow your vet’s instructions.
