Of course, if you were to ask your pet, he’d probably insist that every day should be Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day … and he really wouldn’t be wrong! The first-and perhaps most important-benefit of giving your furry friend treats is pretty simple: it makes Fido happy! While tail wags may not seem like they’d be at the top of a dog care tips list, it actually is very important for your cute pet to feel loved, happy, and safe. Treats are also a great training aid, and a wonderful way to reward your canine buddy for behaving properly.

It’s probably safe to say that Fido would be more than happy to sample every brand and type of dog biscuit you can find. However, that wouldn’t really be good for either his waistline or his health. Get into the habit of reading labels, and try to pick products that contain ingredients you can actually identify. Meat should be listed first on the label, and more often than anything else. Avoid getting treats and products from overseas: not all countries utilize strict regulations for pet products.

If you like cooking, you can certainly try making Fido’s snacks. You’ll find lots of recipes online. It’s probably safe to say your furry pal won’t mind sampling some different ones to see what he likes best. Just be sure to stick with safe ingredients. Some good ones are plain, boneless meat, fish, or poultry; cheese; eggs; pureed pumpkin; plain yogurt; peanut butter; and wheat germ oil. Never give your dog anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; chocolate; alcohol; pitted fruit; meat on the bone; or xylitol.
