7 Ways to Spoil a Senior Pet

November 1, 2018

November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! Senior pets are very cute and lovable, and often make wonderful pets. Fluffy and Fido do need some extra TLC in their golden years, however. If you’re considering adopting an older pet, or if your own furry companion is getting along in years, read on! A Las Vegas, NV vet offers tips on how to pamper a senior pet in this article.

Comfy Beds

Pets are fond of sleeping at all ages, but they get extra drowsy as they grow older. Make sure your furry companion has lots of soft, comfy beds and napping spots.

Veterinary Care

Your vet may recommend more frequent appointments once your pet is a senior. If your pet develops a health condition, such as arthritis or diabetes, get specific care instructions. At home, keep an eye out for signs of illness. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Suitable Activity

It’s normal for pets to slow down as they age. However, it’s important to keep your pet active. Fido will need at least a short daily walk. As for Fluffy, she will benefit from regular play sessions.

Climate Control

Senior pets are much more sensitive to temperature extremes than their younger counterparts are. When it gets really hot out, keep your pet comfy and cozy in rooms cooled by fans and/or AC.

Senior Facilities

There are now many modern products aimed at helping older animals. Pet ramps or stairs will help Fluffy jump onto the bed, and will make it easier for Fido to get in and out of the car. Cats may also appreciate litterboxes with low walls, while dogs may enjoy raised doggy dishes.

Nightlights

It isn’t uncommon for older dogs and cats to experience a decline in their vision or hearing. Keeping a nightlight on after dark will help your furry buddy find their way around more easily.

Love

At the end of the day, the best thing you can do for your furry best friend is make sure they feel loved and safe. Spend time with your pet every day! This is a very special time in your animal companion’s life, so savor it. Purrs and tail wags from older dogs and cats are truly precious!
