6 Ways to Help Your Cat Beat the Heat

July 15, 2016

Nevada summers can be scorchers! While some of us enjoy the heat, it can be pretty tough on our feline friends. Kitties can’t easily cool themselves off if they get too hot: panting isn’t as effective for them as it is for dogs, and they only sweat through their paw pads. Your pet could get very sick if she overheats! Below, a Las Vegas, NV veterinarian offers advice on keeping your cat cool this summer.

Climate Control

The best way to help Fluffy beat the heat? Keep her indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioning. Your cat will not only stay cool, she’ll also be safer and healthier. Kitties that go outside are exposed to many dangers, such as cars, parasites, weather, and other animals, and are much more likely to get lost, hurt, or even killed.

Comfort Zone

As you have probably noticed, cats are masters at getting comfortable. If you give your kitty free access to your home, she’ll naturally seek out the coolest room. (Of course, Fluffy will probably sprawl out in the middle of traffic flow, but that’s just what cats do.)

Cool Beds

Your cat may appreciate having a fan near her bed. If you like, you can even make Fluffy a kitty hammock. These are cooler than regular beds, because air can pass beneath them. All you need to do is attach a piece of material to the legs of an end table or coffee table. Look online for step-by-step directions.

Grooming Sessions

Brushing your kitty regularly will remove dead fur and dander from her coat, which will help keep her cool and comfy.

Water

Making sure Fluffy always has plenty of fresh water is always important, but it’s particularly crucial in hot weather. Consider getting your cat an automated waterer or a kitty fountain.

Cold Treats

Drop an ice cube into Fluffy’s bowl on sweltering days. You can also put one down on the floor for her to bat around. Since cats’ paw pads help them regulate their temperature, this is a great way for frisky kitties to cool off! To make your pet a cool snack, mix undrained tuna with plain yogurt and parsley, and freeze in small portions.
