Summer Treats for Fido

June 15, 2016

Summertime here in Nevada can be brutally hot. That sweltering heat can also be pretty tough on our canine friends. After all, Fido already has a fur coat on! Many of us love to cool off on scorching summer days by enjoying a cold treat, such as ice cream. Why not make your furry buddy his own special snacks? In this article, a local Las Vegas, NV vet lists some great summer doggy treats.

Doggy Ice Cream

You can pick up ice cream for your furry friend in many pet stores and grocery stores, but you can also make your own. Start with plain yogurt, and then add peanut butter, honey, wheat germ oil, or sodium-free broth. Customize your pooch’s special snack by adding cooked, plain meat; shredded cheese; bacon bits; pieces of kibble or dog biscuits; or even dog-safe fruits and veggies.

Pupsicles

It’s very easy to make a doggy version of this summer classic. Freeze dog biscuits; cooked, unseasoned meat (without the bone); bacon bits; chew sticks; or safe fruits and veggies in water or sodium-free broth. You can use an ice cube tray or wax paper cups, or order cute bone-shaped molds.

Cheeseburger Yums

This one is bound to get that cute furry tail wagging! Cook up some plain hamburger, and then add water. Mix it with bits of cheese and bacon bits, and then freeze in small portions for your pooch.

Tuna Pops

Mix a can of tuna with plain yogurt, and add a little parsley. Freeze them in ice cube trays for your four-legged buddy.

Frozen Banana Treat

Blend yogurt, bananas, and peanut butter together. You can use an ice cube tray or a cupcake tin to freeze and mold them.

Tips

These are just a few recipes you can make for Fido: you can find many more online. Just be sure to use only dog-safe ingredients. Some of the things you want to avoid giving Fido include garlic, onions, and scallions; avocados; pitted fruits; chocolate; caffeine; grapes, currants, and raisins; nuts; and anything containing xylitol. Also, be sure not to offer your pooch too many frozen snacks at once: just one or two at a time is plenty. Ask your vet for more information.

Enjoy your summer! Please reach out to us, your local Las Vegas, NV animal hospital, for all your pet’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
