Flying With Fido

December 1, 2021

Season’s Greetings! Compared to last year, this holiday season is shaping up to be much busier. Many people like to bring their dogs with them when traveling …. even on planes. Is that a good idea, really? A vet discusses flying with Fido below.

Think It Over

For dogs, flying can be quite stressful. The concept of flight is something Fido doesn’t really understand, and he can get very scared by the vibration and noise. Your canine buddy may be happier and more comfortable being boarded. Something else to consider here is size. A big pooch that has to fly in cargo will have a much harder flight than a small dog that can fit in your lap. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Have Paperwork

Bring copies of Fido’s vaccination and registration records with you. While paper copies can fit in your flight bag, taking pictures and mailing them to yourself is also a good idea. That way you’ll have them in both your inbox and phone gallery, and can access them from anywhere, online.

Go Direct

Granted, direct flights may cost a bit more, but they’re much easier on your canine companion. Try to avoid layovers. Otherwise, book the flight with the shortest stops If that isn’t an option.

Do Some Research

Pet travel policies can vary quite widely from airline to airline. This is one area where you definitely want to read the fine print! Remember that some airlines have better safety records for pet travel than others. Before you book your flight, do some reading. Also, consider asking your vet about options for calming medications to make the trip easier on Fido.

Food

You may not be able to find Fido’s usual treats and food at your destination. Consider shipping them to your destination. And if you’re staying at an AirBnB or hotel, you’ll need to coordinate with them or use a mail store.

ID

Make sure your canine pal is microchipped, and that the information is up to date in the registry. Fido should also be wearing ID tags. Put ID tags on him if he’ll be traveling in a crate as well. Luggage tags work well for this. You can also use a mailing label. Make it waterproof by putting some clear tape over it.
