Caring For Your Dog’s Toys

December 1, 2019

Does your dog sometimes run up to you holding his favorite toy? This adorable request for doggy playtime can definitely melt hearts. However, if the plaything Fido is offering you is little more than a crusty piece of material, well, it may be time for a new one. Making sure your dog’s toys are clean and in good shape is very important. Dogs use their mouths to play, so their toys can get pretty gross. Here, a Las Vegas, NV vet discusses caring for your pup’s belongings.

Stuffed Animals

Most stuffed animals are machine-washable, though you’ll want to check label instructions to confirm. If possible, wash it on hot, using unscented detergent. Of course, the question here is whether or not the plush toy is worth washing. If it’s ripped, you’ll want to repair the holes before washing. It’s best to remove any small parts, like buttons or eyes, as these can be choking hazards. The squeakers can also be a concern, as some dogs will remove them and try to eat them.

Tennis Balls

You can wash your furry pal’s tennis balls in the washing machine. Use unscented detergent and the gentle cycle, and then hang dry. (Tip: hang it in a spot Fido can’t see.)

Plastic/Rubber Toys

Most rubber and plastic toys can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Use an old toothbrush to remove any gunk or grime, and then put it in the dishwasher. You don’t need to use soap. Hot water and steam will clean and disinfect the toys without leaving residue.

Chew Toys

Did you know that chewing is actually good for your canine companion? Chewing helps keep Fido’s jaws strong. It also keeps his teeth clean, by stimulating saliva. However, effectively washing chew toys can be tricky. Try putting it in a plastic bag and freezing overnight. It may not look much better afterwards, but at least it won’t be as germy.

Rope Toys

Tug O War is one of Fido’s favorite games! To clean your canine pal’s rope toy, start by removing any metal parts. Then, soak it in water and pop it in the microwave for about a minute. Make sure it’s cool and dry before giving it back to your pet.
