Keeping a Hamster Happy

October 15, 2018

Are you looking for a pet that is tiny but super cute? A hamster just might fit the bill! These little guys are very lovable. They’re also very popular as children’s pets. But how does one go about spoiling a hamster? A Las Vegas, NV vet discusses hamster care below.

Breed Research

Different types of hamster have different needs. For instance, Syrian hamsters should be kept by themselves, as they don’t play well with others. Many dwarf hamsters, however, can live with others. Read up on your new pet.

Cage

The minimum size cage your hamster will need will depend on what type of hamster you have. As noted above, you’ll want to do some research before you go shopping. That said, bigger is always better, so get the largest cage you can. Make sure it offers suitable airflow. A cage with a mesh top is a good option, for this reason. You’ll need to add a suitable substrate, such as aspen, as well as a water bottle and a hidey-hole. Nesting material is also important. You can use shredded tissue paper for this.

Toys

Your little pet will spend most of his time in his cage, so make it fun and comfortable for him by incorporating things like tunnels and mazes. Exercise wheels are also fine, but choose a solid one: wire wheels can be dangerous. Hamsters have open-rooted teeth, so their tiny choppers never stop growing. Make sure your hamster has plenty of suitable chew toys. You can make your pet’s playthings out of cardboard, paper, and even certain woods. Ask your vet for more information.

Suitable Diet

Your hamster’s diet should consist of high-quality hamster pellets or mixes, fresh Timothy hay, and small amounts of grains and fresh produce. For treats, you can offer dog biscuits, a bit of cheese, or cooked egg or chicken. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Good Location

Choosing the right spot for your hamster is very important. Hamsters have specific temperature needs: they should be kept in rooms that never go below about 68F or above 80F. Don’t put your tiny pet in direct sunlight, or near drafts, vents, or air conditioners. If you have dogs or cats, keep the hamster cage off the floor.
