National Puppy Day

March 15, 2018

National Puppy Day is coming up March 23rd. There’s almost nothing more adorable than a baby dog. Getting a puppy is a big responsibility, however. That first year is a crucial time in Fido’s life! A Las Vegas, NV vet discusses puppy care below.

Veterinary Care

We recommend that all dogs be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on vaccinations, parasite control, and exams. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Nutrition

A good diet is important for dogs of all ages, but it’s especially crucial during Fido’s growth phase. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including serving sizes and suitable snacks.

Puppyproofing

Baby dogs are super curious. Little Fido will want to investigate everything around him, and figure out what he can and can’t eat or play with. Remove or secure toxic plants; chemicals; medications; plastic bags, wires, and ties; ropes and cords; and small or sharp objects. You’ll also want to use trashcans and hampers with secure lids.

Training

Little Fido certainly has lots to learn about petiquette! Get your cute pet started out on the right paw in life by starting obedience training, housebreaking, and crate training right away.

Socialization

In order for Fido to grow into a friendly, trusting adult dog, he’ll need to be exposed to both new people and new dogs. This has to be done while your canine pal is still young, before he has formed an opinion of the world. Host a puppy party, or make some doggy playdates for your pooch!

Toys

Toys are very important to little Fido’s health and well-being. Offer your four-legged pal lots of fun playthings, including safe, suitable chew toys.

Grooming

Bathtime may never be Fido’s favorite thing, but he’ll be much more accepting of it if he’s introduced to it while he’s still young. You’ll also want to get your furry friend accustomed to getting his nails and teeth done.

Tail Wags

Puppies grow very quickly, and Fido’s adorable toddler phase will be over before you know it. Spend time with your canine buddy every day, and just enjoy this special time in your pet’s life. Walk him, pet him, and play with him. Puppy kisses and tail wags are both truly precious gifts in our book!
