8 People Foods You Should Never Feed Your Cat

October 15, 2016

Do you have a fussy feline, one that will only eat certain things? Or will your kitty happily gobble up anything and everything? If your cat falls into the latter category, you’ll need to be very careful with what you feed Fluffy. Some of our favorite foods are very dangerous to cats! Here, a Las Vegas, NV vet lists some people foods you should never feed your pet.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a must for many of us, especially in the morning, but it’s very dangerous for kitties, and can cause rapid breathing and heart palpitations. Give your furball some fresh water instead.

Garlic and Onions

These dangerous foods are particularly problematic because they are often used as seasonings. Err on the side of caution, and offer Fluffy some catnip.

Alcohol

Even a teaspoon of alcohol can cause serious brain and liver damage in cats. Keep Fluffy away from alcoholic beverages! However, she can have sodium-free chicken broth.

Chocolate

Eating a chocolate bar may seem like a little piece of heaven for many people, but cocoa has a very different effect on our feline friends. It can cause heart problems, as well as tremors and even seizures. Give your kitty some tuna to activate the purr.

Milk

Despite those iconic, adorable images of kitties happily lapping milk, dairy actually isn’t good for your cat, and can cause vomiting or diarrhea. Offer your cat some kitty milk from a pet store.

Raisins and Grapes

No one is sure why grapes and raisins are so dangerous to pets, but even eating just one can cause dogs to go into kidney failure. Fluffy is somewhat pickier than Fido, but don’t take chances. If your furball has a sweet tooth, give her a few blueberries.

Xylitol

Xylitol is very dangerous, and is found in many processed foods. Always check labels before giving Fluffy people foods. Or, better yet, just give her kitty treats!

Raw Foods

Raw meat, eggs, and fish are very dangerous for both people and cats. Fluffy could contract dangerous bacteria, such as salmonella or E. Coli, from eating undercooked foods. Give your furball cooked, plain meat, fish, or poultry instead. Just be sure to remove bones, skin, and fat first!
